Deskritter

June 2023 - present

Project Status: Released, receiving slow updates

Tools: Godot, Procreate

Deskritter is a simple cross-platform desktop buddy! It has several different behaviors, including wandering, sleeping, and following your cursor. There are two hidden mood stats that affect its behavior. You can interact with it by petting it, picking it up, and swinging it around. You can also customize it by replacing any of the images in the “img” folder!

To pick up Deskritter, click and drag it! To pet it, hover your mouse over it and move it back and forth quickly. To change the settings (volume and disabling/enabling mouse chasing), right click it.

This is Deskritter’s second iteration. For now it’s just a digital toy, but eventually, I’d like to make a version with self care features!

Some notes on creating your own skins for Deskritter:

  • Deskritter’s window is 128x128px, so images work best at that exact size.
  • Make sure that all image names match the names in the example images included with Deskritter.
  • At the very minimum, there must be an “idle1.png” sprite. All other sprites are optional!
  • Most behaviors can have up to two frames. They will work with only one frame!
  • If the img folder is removed or idle1.png does not exist, Deskritter will default to Peripat.
  • Deskritter was designed with Shimeji images in mind, so if you have any old Shimeji lying around, they can be converted to Deskritters simply by renaming the images.

Deskritter works great on Windows and Linux! On Mac, it is functional, but custom skins do not work. I plan to share the source code soon so that Mac users can manually add custom sprites.

The default character is Peripat from Invertipets. Mouse cursor sprites from here!
